Gankutsuou (The Count of Monte Cristo) Episode 1

Story:

Based on the book by Andre Dumas, but in some kind of futuristic world with spaceships and stuff. Young Albert and his friend Franz arrive in Luna just in time for the festival. They go to an opera with a friend of Franz's and see the Count of Monte Cristo there as well. Albert is immediately fascinated by him and when he sees that the Count has dropped his watch in the hallway of the opera house he chases after him to return it. He doesn't end up returning the watch, but is invited the next day to have dinner with the Count who then invites them to go to the executions tomorrow, as they are the "highlight" of the festival (fun fun). Right before the men are executed, the Count reveals that he has a pardon letter that was given to him and that he wants Albert and Franz to choose which of the prisoners will not be executed. However, he wants it to be fair so he has them choose a card with the man's initials on it. Franz doesn't like the idea of this and tries to get Albert to leave, but Albert decides to pick a card (which of course contains the initials of the man that most deserved to be killed). Afterwards, Albert is angry and goes off by himself to sulk, but comes across a girl who gave him a flower when he first arrived in Luna. When the lights go out at the stroke of midnight and the fireworks start, Albert and the girl begin to make out, but she pulls a gun on him... (according to the preview she's in a group of thieves or something).

Sorry for the long story summary, but even though it doesn't seem like a lot happened in the episode, it just was kinda detailed to explain...

My Take:

This show is just so interesting to watch with all the crazy CG and patterns, I'd watch it for that reason alone. The patterns do get a little confusing sometimes cause you don't know what you're looking at once in awhile. It's kinda weird for it to be set in a sci-fi kind of setting while at the same time being old-fashioned in many ways. Anyways, the story was pretty interesting and I think it will definitely get more interesting in the future. I think after a few more episodes I can really decide if I like this show or am just easily impressed by the visuals. The OP song was pretty awful and not very pretty to look at either. The ED was better (tho the same singer) with crazy trippy scenes including some kind of winged mech thing... which was wired to say the least.
